Wild Bubba's welcomes Grand Prix to Elroy

When we say eat like a local, we mean really local. Not Austin’s twist on Tex-Mex, and not that delicious BBQ you’ll find on the East Side. Save gourmet dinners for the city. If you want to get down to the heart of Formula One cuisine in Central Texas, you have to start at the property line: Elroy.

Yes, now is when you say, “Where the hell is Elroy, TX?” You’re not the first to ask. In fact, this question is common enough that there is a bumper sticker which poses the very same question. The sticker – and the answer – can be found at Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill.

Why you should go:

- They like Formula One. They really, really like it. The US Grand Prix area is, literally, their backyard. They’ve hosted F1 “Meet and Greets,” one of which was visited by Tavo Hellmund and others involved in the USGP. A corner of the restaurant is dedicated to an F1 shrine – walls covered with images of racing celebrities, local enthusiasts, and a TV playing recorded races. Wyman “Wild Bubba” Gilliam and his team publish an ambitious news flyer that has changed its name from “The Elroy Gazette” to “The Speed City Gazette.” All this plus genuinely nice staff who love to talk about the upcoming USGP. Come, support a local business, and feel welcomed.

-Eat here before you get tired of Tex-Mex. We at Austin Race Hotels can’t think of another place within 1 mile of the track where you can choose wild game sandwiches from around the world. You might see Kangaroo burgers, Wagyu chili, other meat offerings like Axis deer, Antelope, Buffalo, Cabrito (baby goat), and more. The “Gazette” also provides recipes for low-fat, low-cholesterol wild game dishes. Impress your friends back home with some nice Texas Rattlesnake Chili (requires peanut butter, semisweet chocolate, and one six-foot rattlesnake). Prices are reasonable and it’s worth a stop.

Getting here:

Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill is about 15 miles south of downtown. Take 183 South out of Austin. Take a left on FM 812. Continue past the track until you reach 13912 Fm 812 in Elroy. A map that avoids the toll road can be found here.

More information about Wild Bubba’s can be found on their website. “Eat on the Wild side!”
