Elroy, TX Grand Prix Site Confirmed – and it’s going to be Huge!

August 29, 2010: Now that the location of the new US Grand Prix site has been confirmed, organizers are leaking out more information about the new track. We know that it will be a huge property – 900 acres – and according to promoter Tavo Hellmund, could hold 130,000 to 140,000 fans. (UPDATE: In a March 8th meeting with developers, it’s estimated that the capacity would be around 120,000) He also said that 50,000 fans could be seated in the grandstands (!) and the rest could sit on the grounds or walk around the track. Now, for all you thinking that it would be like sitting in the cheap grassy section of a local baseball field, I can say from my USGP experience that it likely won’t be. For example, at the Circuit de Catalunya USGP track near Barcelona, many people chose to walk around the track. There are so many turns you want to see from different perspectives, and it’s more interesting than sitting in the grandstands for hours. Below are some photos I took at a LeMans track day last year. For more photos from that weekend, see the whole post here. As you browse, keep in mind that this European track is SMALLER than the future US Grand Prix track – its capacity is 107,000. More information about Barcelona’s track here.

There should be more news coming soon about developments around the area. I’m certain there will be an influx of local and chain hotels and conference centers. As we gather more information about the track itself, we’ll be able to advise our readers about the lodging and entertainment options for our area.
