Final USGP Date to be Determined this Fall

Below is a blog entry reporting on the proposed dates in circulation for the US Grand Prix. The final date has been confirmed as November 18, 2012.

8/29 Update: Good chance the race will be in November based on the timing for the Major Events Trust Fund application schedule:

“Local promoters for the race have officially — though temporarily — withdrawn their application to tap $25 million from an economic development fund administered by the state comptroller’s office.

CofA spokesman Jeff Hahn confirmed that: ‘The application will be resubmitted once the World Motor Sport Council ratifies the 2012 schedule.’ ” –

8/11 – Last week, we reported the circulation of a tentative 2012 F1 calendar going around the paddocks of a recent Grand Prix. The new document scheduled Austin’s race date on November 18th, rather than the previously-speculated June 17th. Now, is reporting that Bernie Ecclestone has “confirmed” that the race will be in November. In fact, many local and international news outlets are taking his comments as fact and saying the date has been settled for November. reminds you that though the race will happen in 2012, these dates are still speculations — and should be treated as such.

The final USGP date will have to be voted on by the World Motorsport Council, which should happen this September or October. Below are some quotes about today’s news from key players in Austin’s USGP:

  • “I have been hoping for a late season race date since this project began and see this as a very positive sign from Formula One that it wants its U.S. event to be an over-the-top success. Mr. Ecclestone has dozens of competing issues to consider when it comes to the race calendar. He has to balance the interests of the teams with those of the promoters and even consider the unique situation of each host country. To put our race near the end of the schedule puts us in a prime spot to welcome the world next year – and I could not be more personally and professionally appreciative.” - Tavo Hellmund, Chairman of the United States Grand Prix.

  • “First and foremost, we want our fans to have a great experience when they come here. The prospect of milder weather makes that more likely. It also gives us time to better prepare our staff and the thousands of volunteers who will be supporting Formula One race week festivities.” - Steve Sexton, President of Circuit of The Americas.

  • “I am pleased that Formula One and Circuit of the Americas are now looking at an event date in the fall, outside our Ozone Action Season. I believe this date will prove a better experience for the visitors coming to Austin, and is an environmentally sensitive decision.” - Lee Leffingwell, Austin Mayor

Our recommendation: remain patient until the official date decision is made this fall unless you are comfortable that your hotel will accommodate your date change. There are hotel room “booking windows” that have opened for neither the June nor November race date, which means that there will be a few more rooms to be found in and around Austin. Research hotels/lodging options and be aware that our dates may be in either June or November. (Some people have been booking for both June AND November dates just to be safe)

The anticipation continues to build for the 2012 Grand Prix race in Austin!
