Side Trip: Hill Country Wines (Map Included)

Texas Wine Travel

Texas Wine Travel

It’s true, Texas has a healthy wine industry. Here’s why:

The Hill Country wineries are growing more and more popular with every passing harvest. Texas’ vines were planted here over a hundred years before California’s were. Not to mention our root stock just about saved the French wine industry from the Phylloxera epidemic. Ah, still not convinced? Take the scenic drive for yourself and give our wines a taste.

We’ve created a map with a suggested route to Fredericksburg, a charming wine hotspot less than two hours west of Austin. On the way there, you’ll experience some of the best scenery we can offer (the difference between east and west Austin is remarkable). A number of new and old wineries are just off Highway 290. You can also take a fun drive through smaller curvy roads which are popular with bikers and passenger cars, or drive through the quintessential Texas town of Luckenbach, partly made famous by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Grab a beer and hang out with a biker. Get a hearty lunch or dinner in the old German town of Fredericksburg. Have Texas’ famous Blue Bell ice cream and do a little shopping, stop in at the next winery, spend the night in Fredericksburg and enjoy the area. Below is a link to a map we’ve created for you to explore the Hill Country wine scene.
